Studio Visit: Neila Mezynski

Neila Mezynski is an artist located in California. Her work can be seen in PLEAT's December 2015 exhibition.

Could you tell us a bit about your material choices?
I tend to work in series so I choose materials that are necessary for that particular series. At the moment (and for about a year and a half) I've been working on a project titled "House". The materials I'm using are mainly wood: doors, windows, tables, etc., also cardboard.

Could you walk us through a typical day in your studio?
These days my energies are involved with found objects and large installation projects; my time is spent hunting down the necessary materials. assembling the work and then finding a place to install said work. This project manifests itself in either isolated installations of a house or all of a piece for another: windows, doors, tables, chairs heaped and placed strategically or a stand alone installation per each.

Who are your artistic influences and what have you learned from them?
Louise Bourgeois's work has certainly been an influence and Willem DeKooning and Cy Twombly as a painter and sculptor. The trick of it is to love the influence/influencer but decipher it to one's own needs,  ideas and then work; a jumping off place.
